While the other boys were learning how to tie their white bucks and sail, Teddy was mastering the bowtie and rigging the boom…and the uncut skipper. But enough about Nantucket, let’s talk about the hive. Growing up wasp: Emily Post meets Jackie (Catholic) Kennedy meets Xanax. While Teddy’s Stubbs and Wootton shoes and double-jointed wrists are the antithesis of conspicuous, a wasp has more family secrets than patterns on a vintage Lilly Pulitzer blazer. Subtlety and repression cement wasp culture: old over new money (but subtly…i.e. flying coach to Biarritz instead of first class, obviously), Everglades Club over Mar-A-Logo, and finally, apathy over emotion (thank god for the family psychiatrist and that joint from the bartender at Dorrian’s).
